Do's & Don'ts
The rules every dog owner needs to know

๐Ÿ– Feeding

DO

  • Feed on a schedule (2x per day for adults)
  • Measure portions โ€” obesity is the #1 health problem
  • Provide fresh water 24/7
  • Read ingredient labels โ€” meat should be #1
  • Use treats for training (small, soft ones)

DON'T

  • Free-feed (leaving food out all day)
  • Give chocolate, grapes, onions, xylitol, garlic
  • Feed from the table โ€” this creates begging
  • Give cooked bones โ€” they splinter and can kill
  • Overfeed treats โ€” should be less than 10% of diet

๐ŸŽ“ Training

DO

  • Use positive reinforcement (treats, praise, play)
  • Keep sessions short (5-10 min max)
  • Be consistent โ€” same words, same rules, every time
  • End on a success โ€” even if it's an easy command
  • Practice in different locations
  • Reward the behavior you WANT, ignore what you don't

DON'T

  • Hit, yell, or use physical punishment โ€” EVER
  • Use shock collars or prong collars on puppies
  • Rub their nose in accidents โ€” it doesn't work
  • Train when you're frustrated โ€” they feel your energy
  • Expect perfection โ€” dogs have bad days too
  • Call them to you for punishment โ€” ruins recall forever

๐Ÿ  At Home

DO

  • Puppy-proof your house (cords, shoes, chemicals)
  • Give them their own space (crate, bed, area)
  • Exercise daily โ€” a tired dog is a good dog
  • Mental stimulation โ€” puzzle toys, training, sniff walks
  • Stick to a routine โ€” dogs thrive on predictability

DON'T

  • Leave them alone for 8+ hours without a break
  • Let them chew on shoes/furniture without redirecting
  • Ignore destructive behavior โ€” it means they're bored or stressed
  • Skip vet visits โ€” annual checkups catch problems early
  • Forget dental care โ€” brush teeth or use dental chews

๐ŸŒณ Outside

DO

  • Always leash in unfenced areas
  • Pick up after your dog โ€” every time
  • Let them sniff on walks โ€” that's their social media
  • Check for ticks after walks in nature
  • Bring water on hot days
  • Teach them to be calm around other dogs

DON'T

  • Walk on hot pavement โ€” test with your hand (5 seconds)
  • Let them off-leash until recall is 100% reliable
  • Force interactions with dogs or people they're scared of
  • Leave them in a hot car โ€” EVER (even 5 minutes can kill)
  • Let them eat random things off the ground

๐Ÿ• Socialization

DO

  • Introduce to new people/dogs gradually and positively
  • Let them approach on their own terms
  • Socialize before 16 weeks (critical window)
  • Expose to different sounds, surfaces, environments
  • Pair new experiences with treats and praise

DON'T

  • Force them into scary situations
  • Let strange dogs rush up to yours
  • Take unvaccinated puppies to dog parks
  • Ignore signs of fear (tail tucked, whale eye, lip licking)
  • Assume all dogs want to be friends โ€” some don't, and that's OK

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heat Stroke Signs โ€” Act Fast

What to do: Move to shade/AC immediately. Apply cool (NOT cold) water to belly, paws, ears. Offer small amounts of water. Get to a vet ASAP. Do NOT use ice โ€” it constricts blood vessels and makes it worse.
